Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6 SE2.7-litre turbo-diesel, six-speed auto |
For the first time in years the best of the British is good enough to be the best for Australians. Land Rover’s turbo-diesel powered, seven-seat Discovery 3 SE is a rare find. It makes a mockery of its bulk with impressive cornering abilities, accurate steering and dependable grip levels.
The suppression of road and engine noise is another highlight and this diesel shames many petrol powerplants. A clever five-mode Terrain Response system allows for variations of Discovery’s electronic controls, air suspension, gearbox characteristics and differential settings accordingly and boosts its off-road strengths.
Performance from the 2.7-litre common rail diesel and its clever transmission is laudable. It offers ample pulling power, prompt overtaking response and up to 3500kg of braked towing capacity. The 4WD’s fuel economy is good and its modern engine sidesteps significant emissions penalties. Discovery also soaks up bumps with assurance and brakes with aplomb.
In design terms it sets a high standard for space and security. Seven adults can comfortably fill its theatre-type seats. There is also plenty of safety, practicality and adjustability on offer.
Although best on standard features in its class, it lags in value. A high price and grim outlook on losses at resale time sap its scores while costs are high to maintain, repair and insure.
Discovery also dips on safety scores, as does another finalist, the Toyota Prado GXL.
The Prado lacks electronic stability control, a benefit in the avoidance of rollovers. Movements in security also harm the Toyota. However, the petrol Prado is still a prudent pick. Decent in the value stakes, its credentials strengthen in design and function, particularly on seating, before it picks up the pace again in dynamics. It provides a creamy ride, dependable handling and useful
characteristics in performance, towing and smoothness/quietness. It is just as able off-road.
Mitsubishi’s Pajero has a five-year warranty which aids its scores, while its safety mark is above average. Also, the Di-D engine is a willing (but noisy) performer. It is a consistent, versatile and frugal off-roader, one worth consideration.
